UAB Boshell — Birchfield Penuel Architects

Owner: university of al at birmingham

Location: birmingham, AL

Project Size: 12,500 SF

BPA revitalized the 8th floor of UAB’s Boshell Diabetes Research and Education Building, transforming outdated biomedical labs into modern computational research spaces. Originally constructed in 1972, the building had seen minimal updates, making this redesign essential to supporting UAB’s expanding research initiatives.

The project introduced a blend of collaborative and individual workspaces, integrating state-of-the-art technology to foster innovation and data-driven research. Despite budget constraints, BPA successfully updated the space to meet current building codes while optimizing functionality. The result is a fully modernized environment that enhances UAB’s ability to conduct advanced computational research in a dynamic and efficient setting.
